PELLE ‘S MODE Recently browsing the web about Clavia Nord Lead synthesizers, I found a very informative website describing a quite awesome ‘mode’ that Clavia Nord Lead version 1 and 2 are able to let you experiment with. As a owner of a Clavia Nord Rack 2, this got me very excited and so I tested it. It works and it works well ! A bit of the story : Pelle is the nick name of Peter Jubel who was part of the development team behind the Clavia Nord Lead 1. He was interested by another synthesis method that didn’t integrated well with the design of the Clavia Nord Lead 1. The Pelle’s Mode : In this very special mode, none of the Clavia Nord Lead knobs react as they are supposed to, there is no documentation about it and here, you enter in a truly experimental area. First note of importance, Master level and gain knobs have no functions so it’s better to use this mode with your synthesizer connected through a mixer with the possibility to quickly reduce the level. Some sounds come at very high level and could damage your speakers. Also, you’re the only responsible if something bad and not expected happens.  How to ? : To enter the Pelle’s Mode, you’ll need to know Peter Jubel birth year…  Slot A : 19 / Slot B : 65 Then you have to press and hold the Portamento button, followed by the Shift button, followed by the Velocity/Morph, release it (Velocity/Morph) and press the Manual/Perf.Mode button. You’re now in Pelle’s Mode ! In use : At this point, buttons are not working anymore except the Portamento used to go out of the Pelle’s Mode. Almost all knobs are reacting except Master Level and Gain.  None of the knobs correspond to it’s original function, some do little to the sound and others radically change it. Since all buttons are freezing, there is no way to save your ‘preset’ except writing down the position of all knobs. Conclusion : It’s a very nice hidden feature of the Nord Lead and I’m going to experiment a lot with Pelle’s Mode. I’ll certainly post tracks resulting of my experiments with Pelle’s mode.
